Beautiful Creatures: Great Film, No So Great Adaptation

Beautiful CreaturesNote from the author: This time I did something much different with the review. I wanted to include the changes in the film from the book since parts of it were so different.

Although I discuss some of these changes in the review I decided to include the major plot changes after the main part of the article so that fans of the book can read the differences, yet moviegoers won't be spoiled if they don't want to be, nor bored reading about things that only happened in the book. The section is marked after the review.

Valentine's Day marks the opening of a few different films this year, including Beautiful Creatures, which technically opened with a 10pm showing last night across the country as opposed to midnight. Knowing from trailers that I really wanted to see the film, I opted to get the book that the film was based on, written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, before I saw it (and loved it, I'm on the last book in the series now). Doing that can sometimes give you different expectations.

As a film, it was well crafted and I definitely enjoyed it, though I admit spent a large portion of the movie comparing it to the book and questioning why some parts were changed – a lot (see below).

The overall story was the same: a Mortal (Ethan Wate, played by Alden Ehrenreich) and Caster (i.e. witch) fall in love but can't be together because of their circumstances. The girl, Lena (Alice Englert), is about to turn 16 and will be Claimed for either the Light or the Dark, regardless of choice.

Supernatural 8.14 Review: “Trial and Error”

By John Keegan

supernatural_iconAfter the gloriousness of the previous episode, which was Ben Edlund hitting all cylinders, I suppose it makes sense that this would be a bit of a letdown. After all, a lot of the excitement that came out of the previous episode was the potential for the future, especially with the announcement that “Supernatural” was going to get a ninth season! So a bit of a backslide into the demon tablet plot thread was naturally going to feel like a step back.

Arrow 1.14: “The Odyssey”

By John Keegan

arrow_iconFor the past few episodes, many fans have felt that the strongest elements of the story were related to Oliver’s flashbacks to his time on the island. Perhaps the writers were well aware of how things were progressing, because this episode feels like a culmination of that process. Oliver has been in a less effective mode since his encounter with Merlyn and Vertigo, and there have been some major developments in his worldview. It makes sense, then, that this latest wound would divert his unconscious mind to a pivotal moment on the island.

The Walking Dead 3.9 Review: “Suicide King”

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

The-Walking-Dead-iconIt was always a bit of a mystery what kind of episode “The Walking Dead” would return with. Another big plot-driven episode like the mid-season finale? Something more intimate and emotional? Expectations were high, and maybe that’s the problem with “The Suicide King”, because it doesn’t hit any truly big notes. Most of the running time is spent getting us reacquainted with the post-apocalypse, with only a few token hints towards what kind of storytelling we might get in the future.

DVD Review: "Femme Fatales: Season One" Review - A Blend of Erotica & Film Noir

By Jamie Ruby

Femme Fatales: Season OneFemme Fatales: The Complete First Season

The Cinemax adult series Femme Fatales blends film noir, erotica, and variety of other genres. Each episode gives you something different.

Season one is full of mostly standalone episodes, with the exception of two two-parters, one being the season finale. The overall theme of the show seems to be revenge by women who have been done wrong. Each episode opens with Tanit Phoenix as Lilith (sometimes after the opening teaser), sort of reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt, talking about what's to come during the episode.

New Season of Touch Is a "Thrill Ride"

By Karen Moul

Touch on FOXTouch is back this week after a nine-month hiatus, with a new location and an expanded cast. The two-hour season premiere introduced several new characters played by Maria Bello, Lukas Haas, and Said Taghmaoui.

Fans will also notice a tweaked format. The show is stepping away from a procedural, mystery-of-the-week style and moving towards a more serialized approach. Series creator Tim Kring says that shift is deliberate.
