Advance Preview: Doctor Who - Can You Hear Me? is a Creepy Nightmare

Doctor WhoTonight, an all-new episode of Doctor Who, written by Charlene James and Chris Chibnall, premieres on BBC America. In the episode entitled “Can You Hear Me,” directed by Emma Sullivan, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) returns her friends home to Sheffield with a promise to meet up the next day. However, when Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Ryan (Tosin Cole) return to visit their family and friends, the two have different but equally horrifying experiences. Graham (Bradley Walsh), however, psychically receives a call for help. What is going on, who needs help, and what does it have to do with the Chagaskas terrorizing a hospital from Aleppo, Syria in 1380? It will take all of them facing their fears if they are going to save Earth from whatever is stalking them.

Doctor WhoI liked this week’s episode a lot better than last. This week was more horror based and had some nightmarish elements that really fit that tone. Not to say that there weren’t moments of comedy, but the episode overall was a bit darker and also more introspective. The storyline was unique and a fantastic watch.

There was a lot of excellent character development in the episode, as we got to see what the characters feared. There was also some discussion I really appreciated between Yaz and Ryan that spoke to what it’s like to be traveling with the Doctor and missing your life. Graham also was given a bit more to do this week which was a welcome change.

Doctor WhoThe guest stars Ian Gelder and Clare-Hope Ashitey were great and their interactions interesting.

I also enjoyed the alien and creature design as well as the creepy special effects. Everything fit really well together in the episode.

Overall, I very much liked this episode and I’m excited to see the next.
