"Chernobyl Diaries": Mutant Cannibals in the Dark

By Daniel Denehy

Chernobyl DiariesOh come now, you knew it was mutant cannibals right from the preview, what you want to know is if these mutant cannibals are worth $10 a ticket. Before I talk about the movie though I should share another bit of relevant information about your reviewer's background; I don't like horror movies. Don't get me wrong, gore and scares aren't the problem. It is because most horror movies are very sparse on plot. Far too often I've seen the story in a horror flick boil down to "it's a ghost/vampire/werewolf/demon." Then there's a bunch of people who die followed by a coin toss whether the hero prevails over the evil with his newly acquired love interest or they die in the last scene. There are a few horror movies I like, my favorite of which is John Carpenter's The Thing, and even that can be argued to be more of a monster movie than a horror movie.

"Battleship": "Independence Day" with Boats

By Daniel Denehy

BattleshipBattleship has been receiving a lot of guff from critics since even before it was released. A natural reaction for them I think, given that the previews make it look like the fourth Transformers movie. A series that has polarized movie viewers like none other I've seen. (Since it is partially relevant, and if it's important to you, I enjoy that series. Are they flawless, no, but they are more than enjoyable action flicks.) However, though Battleship may look like Transformers, it is not; it's Independence Day, another big time movie critic punching bag that I enjoy.

Not "Avengers" the Movie; Comic Book the Movie

By Daniel Denehy

AvengersIn the same way that Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy movie, to date there are two epic super hero movies and that's The Watchmen and now The Avengers. The difference between the two can actually be compared to characters their parent companies. Whereas The Watchmen is like Batman, dark and broody, The Avengers is more like Iron Man, charismatic and fun. Yet, despite not having boundary-pushing moral questions, the latter is no less epic than the former.

"Cabin in the Woods" - An Atypical Horror Movie That Breaks Beyond the Genre

By Daniel Denehy

Cabin in the WoodsEvery once in a long while a movie comes along that is of such quality that you feel the need to applaud when the credits roll; a movie that to share the details of which would feel like a crime, because you would be robbing the potential viewer of the amazement that could be had. Cabin in the Woods is one of those movies. Given the state of this movie, and my wish not to be criminal, what will be discussed hereafter will reveal no story from the movie that has not already been revealed in the trailers. Trust me; it is that sort of movie.

The idea for the film came to LaLonde in an unusual way. "It's something very near and dear to me. Also I was looking for an ensemble film to do and I literally saw an article in a magazine titled "Sex After Kids," and it just hit me really hard that no one that I knew of had done something this extensive with this topic, and it's an exciting topic that I think people will enjoy discussing after."

The film should appeal to many because it has such a broad potential audience. "It's such a big subject and everyone that has children has to deal with it."

Chris HeyerdahlOne can see Chris Heyerdahl it seems everywhere these days, even if he's not always recognizable. Heyerdahl has played a variety of characters both in movies and in television, but he almost never looks the same. Some of his more popular roles include his role of Todd the Wraith on Syfy's Stargate: Atlantis (where he also played the more recognizable Halling), Marcus in the hugely popular Twilight film series, his dual roles on Sanctuary as both Biggie (Bigfoot) and John Druitt. NeverlandIf you think you know the story of Peter Pan, think again. Tonight Syfy will premiere the first half of its four-hour original miniseries, Neverland, which will conclude tomorrow night. The story is a prequel - an origin story, penned by Nick Willing, who previously directed the Syfy miniseries Alice, which he also wrote, and Tin Man.
