DVD Review: Teen Wolf Season 3 Part 2

Teen WolfTeen Wolf follows the lives of teenagers from Beacon Hill, including Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), a werewolf. But he's not the only wolf, or supernatural creature for that matter, in town.

The second half of season three picks up after the events surrounding the Nemeton and Jennifer Blake (Haley Webb). Scott, Stiles (Dylan O'Brien), and Allison (Crystal Reed) still feel the effects from their sacrifice to save their parents. Scott has trouble controlling his wolf and starts to transform at times against his will, while Allison has hallucinations of her aunt Kate (Jill Wagner). Stiles, however, feels it more than anyone and goes on a downward spiral, starting from sleep paralysis and not knowing when he is awake, to eventually becoming possessed.

Teen WolfThis half of the season also introduces the character of Kira Yukimura (Arden Cho), who not only becomes a love interest for Scott, but seems to have some insight into what's happening to the three of them, and might have some supernatural secrets of her own.

The last half of the season focuses a lot on Japanese mythology in the back half of the season, which introduces some new supernatural elements. There is also a werecoyote (Shelley Hennig) brought into the mix who will play more of a significant role towards the end of the season.

Season three in my opinion really upped the action and complexity of the story, especially in the back half. There are a lot of things going on and it gets pretty dark at times. O'Brien was definitely the highlight of these episodes and it was great to see a completely different side to his character. He also really pulled off the duality of the personalities well. I also really enjoyed the Japanese mythology that was brought into the series and the role Deaton (Seth Gilliam) played this year.

Without revealing any spoilers, I have to say that I was shocked by the deaths this season, as well as the revelation about the she-wolf, and am excited and curious to see how it plays out in season four.

Packaging:

The DVD set is in the normal clamshell case and contains three discs, each with four episodes, and the third containing the bonus feature. Unfortunately, once again for some reason I don't understand, the series is only available on DVD and not Blu-ray. The contents on each disc are listed on the back of the insert, which you can read without removing discs.

There is only one bonus feature in the set, Following the Pack: The Fans of Teen Wolf, which is exactly what it says, it's about the fans. The talent from the series talk about how great and receptive the fan base for the series is.

Also included in the set is a limited edition fan art collection, which is a booklet of nineteen art pieces that fans have created for the series. Most are traditional art, though some are computer photo art. It's a nice addition to the set.

With so few extras, I would not suggest the set is worth buying specifically for the special features, unless your art is published in the booklet. However, these are some of the best episodes of the series yet.
