Early Review: Defiance - The Opposite of Hallelujah

By Jamie Ruby

DefianceThis season, fans will see quite a different version of Defiance, which premieres Thursday on Syfy. Everyone in the town has been affected by the Earth Republic, who have taken control of the town.

Season two picks up nine months after the events of season one, and Nolan, who is no longer law keeper, is away searching for Irisa, while Amanda has a new role to play as she struggles with her sister's disappearance. Also, with Datak now in prison, the power within the Tarr family will also shift.

DefianceThe tone of the series has dramatically shifted this season, turning a lot darker. It really helps to make the viewer become more invested in the town and its people.

Probably the most dramatic change this year is with Irisa herself. What happened at the end of season one has really changed her in ways no one expected.

DefianceThere is a lot to love about the premiere. After watching the episode, story-wise I was most interested in finding out what is going on with Irisa, how the changes in the Tarr family are probably going to affect the whole town eventually, as well as what is in Datak's future.

My other favorite part was the scenes between Datak and Doc Yewll; they were really a highlight for me and brought a bit of comedy to the episode.

By the end of the episode, you can really tell that the stakes have been raised in the town of Defiance. I can't wait to see what comes next.
