SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Person of Interest 2.17 Review: “Proteus”

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys

person_of_interest_iconIt was a dark and stormy night on Person of Interest, with an episode that plays out like an Agatha Christie who-done-it. Right from the top, the Cinema Village marquee lets us know we’re in for a “Vintage Throwback”. With the Machine not spitting out a number for three straight days, the team has a chance to take in some classic movies. Rashomon and The Rain People turn out to essential viewing, once The Machine returns with six names. They’ll be sifting through conflicting stories for the truth, and someone has taken off across America in search of a new identity.

The Good Wife 4.16 Review: “Runnin’ With The Devil”

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

thegoodwife-iconThere is rampant paranoia going on throughout this episode, which was a return to good form for the show. I understand that being a lawyer is a stressful, time-consuming job. That kind of thing is a perfect fount for drama. It helps also that the episode’s story threads aren’t spread around to cover every little thing. But the characters never seem to take a break from the action.

Being Human 3.9 Review: “Of Mice and Wolfmen”

By John Keegan

Being-Human-icon-being-human-us-17425916-150-150Being Human US has often been full of surprises, especially when twisting familiar elements from the British original into new directions. Much of what happens in this episode is the logical progression of what has come before, but there are some fresh perspectives along the way. Not everyone is going to be happy with how a particular situation was resolved, but even there, it doesn’t feel like a cheat.

John Ratzenberger Guest Stars on FX's "Legit"

By Karen Moul

John RatzenbergerLegit pours on some star power this week when John Ratzenberger (Cheers, Toy Story) guest stars as Steve and Billy’s dad, Walter. It seems mom Janice has become a hoarder, forcing Walter to move into a tent in the backyard, and of course Jim’s intervention goes awry.

Ratzenberger is a fan of Legit’s aggressive humor. “When I read the Legit script,” he says, “I laughed. I thought, ‘Oh, this is really politically incorrect, but it’s really funny.’

“The writing is the most important part,” he explains. “If you ever noticed with Cheers and Legit, they’re very similar in that you never see the joke coming. With most TV comedies, you know what the joke’s going to be. You can see it three pages away, but with Legit, you don’t see it coming. That’s what I like about it.”

We talked to Ratzenberger about his character, Walter, and his many other film, TV and philanthropic projects. Check out the interview and tune in to Legit Thursdays at 10:30.

The Walking Dead 3.13 Review: “Arrow on the Doorpost”

By John Keegan

The-Walking-Dead-iconBy giving the Governor a more nuanced characterization from the start, the writers for The Walking Deadmade episodes like this possible. Some viewers may not take that as a positive development, but as someone that sees this show as being about the people more than the zombies, I would strongly disagree. Rick and the Governor are engaged in a staring contest, while we see how their respective followers could, given the chance, work together perfectly well.

Spartacus: War of the Damned 3.6 Review: “Spoils of War”

By John Keegan

Spartacus-War-of-the-Damned-300x220After the turnabout in the previous episode, marking the midpoint of the final season, it was inevitable thatSpartacus: War of the Damned would begin the slow march towards the breakdown and defeat of the rebellion. History has already written the script for the endgame: sooner or later, Crassus will drive division among the rebels, ultimately leading to their defeat and the victory of the Romans. The only real question is whether or not Spartacus will literally die, or simply pass into legend as he escapes the battlefield, his death merely assumed.

Grimm 2.13 Review: “Face Off”

By John Keegan

Grimm-2Grimm has been off the air far longer than it should have been, caught up in the latest inexplicable programming decisions by NBC. Armchair quarterbacking of network programmers is hardly a new phenomenon, but the claims from network and industry types that the general audience doesn’t understand the complexities of scheduling are moot when the evidence is right there for all to see!
