Lost Girl 1.11 Review: "Faetal Justice"

A fresh focus doesn't quite cover up the fact that "Lost Girl" is showing signs of stress around the seams. This episode should have been a tight little mystery and a feather in the show's cap, but instead there are too many rough touches in the writing, little moments where things don't come together. Coming on the heels of one of the most revelatory episodes of “Fringe” yet, this episode feels like a bit of a step down. That the central case for the episode wasn’t particularly involving didn’t help the matter, but there was also something lacking in the overall package, especially in how certain expository elements were handled. Even so, this are minor quibbles overall, and the episode continued the winning streak for this season of “Fringe”.

With just a few relatively minor apparent deviations from the historical record, “Spartacus: Vengeance” has managed to set up the climactic battle between Glaber’s Roman forces and Spartacus’ rebels with dramatic flair. I think it’s safe to say that anyone who complains about “lack of action” after this episode should have their head examined.

“Touch” debuted with fairly strong numbers, but with such a long gap between the “sneak preview” and the actual beginning of the series, I was curious to see how the show would fare in the ratings. As this episode was running, I actually felt the slightest bit of sympathy for Quarles. Then I remembered that he is a low-down, sadistic psychopath who is probably even more dangerous now that he has nothing to lose. Boyd had made it his mission from the beginning to get rid of this interloper, and with the sneaky way in which he stole the sheriff's election out from under Quarles' clutches, his job was finally finished.

This episode was running efficiently for about a half hour, stumbled a bit, then recovered its footing somewhat at the end. Frankly, I think that's quite an accomplishment given the narrative maze that's been created and passes for an overall plot. As I've come to expect from "Merlin", the really big plot developments are always saved for the finale, which generally makes them the highlight of any season of the show. Unfortunately, this has the effect of making a lot of the episodes in between feel like filler. This year was a bit better than any previous one in that regard, but it still falls well below my expectations. Still, we're at the finale now, and it's hard not to appreciate it for basically being the kind of episode that we really should be seeing a lot more of on "Merlin".
