Dark Matter: Jimmi Simpson on Ryan's Strengths & Acting Opposite Himself in Season 2

Jimmi SimpsonThe penultimate episode of season two of Dark Matter premiered Friday on Apple TV. Based on the New York Times bestseller by Blake Crouch, the series is about the possible ways your life might have been different if you made different choices, and how the choices you choose to make shape the person you become. In season one, physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) was abducted and dropped into an alternate version of his life by another version of himself. After making his way through a myriad of different realities via the Box, he eventually makes his way back to his own universe and his family.

The alternate version of Jason did not only kidnap another Jason, however, but also his friend Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) from the same universe. In season two, Ryan joins forces with Amanda (Alice Braga) as they travel through different realities, searching for a cure to a deadly virus they encountered along the way. In the ninth episode of the season, the two arrive in World X, where Ryan and Amanda are finally reunited with Jason. Their reunion also brings them together with Blair (Amanda Brugel), who proposes a way to shut down the Boxes permanently, potentially putting an end to travel between realities.

Simpson recently spoke with SciFi Vision about playing multiple versions of Ryan in the series, including scenes in which the characters interact with one another. He discussed the technical process of working with stand-ins, the differences between the Ryans’ emotional and intellectual strengths, and why the low-tech environment of World X appeals to him personally.

'The X-Files' Project Picked Up To Series By Hulu

(BURBANK, Calif. – Oct. 13, 2026) Today, Hulu has announced that Ryan Coogler’s “The X-Files” project has been picked up to series. From Onyx Collective and produced by 20th Television in association with Proximity Media, the series will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel. A reimagining of the classic, the series follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

“I’ve loved ‘The X-Files’ for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”

“We’re looking forward to continuing this journey as executive producers and especially excited to work closely with Jennifer Yale, Simone Harris, and the entire cast and crew as we bring this new chapter of ‘The X-Files’ to life. It was also incredibly special to have our fellow Proximity co-founder Ludwig Göransson contribute the score for the pilot, making this a true collaboration across the Proximity family,” said Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Ryan Coogler, founders of Proximity Media.

Ryan Coogler (Proximity Media) wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot and will serve as executive producer along with showrunner and executive producer Jennifer Yale. Executive producers also include Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian (Proximity Media) and Chris Carter. Co-executive producers are Simone Harris (Proximity Media), Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel.

Dark Matter: Amanda Brugel on Blair's Big Reveal, Her Trauma & What's Ahead in Season 2

Amanda BrugelIn last week’s episode (206, “What the Universe is Made Of”), Dark Matter revealed a major plot twist: Blair Caplan (Amanda Brugel)’s true identity! The Blair that Jason1 (Joel Edgerton) has been hanging out with in analog world is actually Blair2, the woman he and Amanda2 (Alice Braga) left behind in murder hornet world.

In a recent interview, series costar Amada Brugel (The Handmaid’s Tale) told SciFi Vision how excited she was to play what she called “a very patient, earned plot twist.” She also discussed Blair’s current state of mind. Blair says she’s thriving, but is she?

Brugel said yes, Blair is feeling great, “but with all people, any sort of horrifically traumatic event still lives really close to the surface. As we sort of dive deeper towards the end of the season, the mask that she's put on, it's quite a strong mask [but] it's not as resilient as she would have thought.”

Continuing, Brugel hinted that Blair still has some issues to confront.

“She's going to need to go through a couple of things and resolve some things in herself, but also in the world and in a fight against Leighton (Dayo Okeniyi), to truly be able to put a lot of that pain to rest.”
