Ringer 1.16 Review: "You're Too Pretty to Go to Jail"

This episode was full of characters standing around, talking. Which is not at all surprising being that the show is a soap opera playing in primetime, and daytime soaps have many scenes of just characters talking instead of taking action. It's not really all that different from what this show has been doing all season, but my interest in what happens to all of these characters continues to decline.

This episode felt like an attempt to distance the show from the largely self-contained nature of the previous episode with the Ames brothers. It did return to addressing the larger story arc, only to oddly take a step back from a solution that was obvious from the start. That indicates the show might not be willing to change its status quo and is still sidelining a character who might factor very much into the narrative. Of course, the show has so de-emphasized character development at this point that even if she were to somehow come back, there's little chance viewers would care about what happens to her and how she impacts everyone else on it.

Once upon a time, in the far-away mists of TV history, before Lord Hobo and Princess Showtime liberated content from the shackles of the Seasons and the FCC, weekends were a very different place. People actually stayed home on Saturday nights, rapt before CBS’ lineup of killer comedies. And, on Sunday night, families finished off the weekend with the wholesome entertainments of “The Wonderful World of Disney.” The current “Once Upon A Time” initially presented a more sophisticated update. However, recent evidence suggests they are now seeking Walt’s mantle. It’s too bad, then, that they’re closer to evoking the legacy of Sid and Marty Krofft.

To borrow an expression from one of the Critical Myth team's favourite shows, this episode feels like first proper Wham! Episode of "Lost Girl"' with the return of old characters and dangling plot threads, some big new developments, and all of it wrapped around a very strong case of the week. It's something to behold, just how far the show has come from its fun, silly fanservice-laden pilot.

“The River” is the kind of series that can be polarizing. As I mentioned the last time I reviewed the show, I think it fails on the basis of its central gimmick. Certainly the first few episodes relied so much on the “found footage” approach, and the jump scares that come with it, that the story was often buried. It’s no shock that the series has lost nearly half of its original audience, and it’s lucky to still have the chance to be seeing the end of its short first season run.
