Exclusive: Thomas Barbusca Talks Preacher & The Mick

Thomas BarbuscaTonight AMC premieres its new series, Preacher, which is based on the cult comic book series of the same name. The story follows a preacher in a small town in Texas, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), who becomes powerful when he is possessed by a supernatural creature named Genesis.

Thomas Barbusca (Grey's Anatomy, American Horror Story), can be seen tonight on the series playing Chris Schenck.

The actor recently talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about his work on Preacher, as well as starring in The Mick, a comedy series debuting midseason on FOX.

SCIFI VISION: Can you first talk to me about the world of
Preacher, who your character is, and where he fits into it?

Thomas BarbuscaTHOMAS BARBUSCA: I play Chris. My parents are Donnie [Derik Wilson] and Betsy [Jamie Anne Allman]. My character is really troubled and complex. He asks the Preacher to do some really, really weird things. I think everybody's going to see a little innocent kid, and then when they hear what he says, take a step back.

How did you become involved in this show?

I just got the audition, and I went in. I auditioned; then got the call. I booked it and then flew out to New Mexico. We filmed there for about three weeks. I worked with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dominic Cooper, and Derik Wilson. It was really fun.

Have you read any of the comics that the series is based on?

Yeah, I read the first one, because my uncle was a big fan growing up. Once I booked it, he told me he used to be a big fan, and then he gave me one of the comics.

What was your favorite part?

There's a really deep scene between me and Preacher; it was really cool working on that with Dominic Cooper.

What was the hardest part for you filming?

I think just getting in the zone of a really dramatic and deep moment between me and Dominic.

How do you get into that mindset and connect with your character?

Thomas BarbuscaI really just take on the character. Like I believe I'm the character, and I just really get into that moment. Then I just use it for the camera.

Do you have any stories about working with Dominic?

Not really. We were just on set, and in between scenes we were just goofing off.

Is there anything in particular you do to let loose in between scenes?

Not really. I think I just prepare myself beforehand.

Is there a scene you can tease about?

I think everyone will have to find out May 22nd.

You are also in FOX's upcoming series The Mick. How did you become involved in that?

Same thing. I got the audition, I got a call back, and then I booked it.

Obviously Preacher is much darker than The Mick. Which do you prefer, more dramatic or comedic scenes?

Thomas BarbuscaThat's a really hard question. I don't know; I really like both. I think both a dramatic and a funny series are cool.

Do you have a favorite scene you can talk about?

There's this scene in the trailer where Kaitlin Olson, the lead, tells me to stand up for myself and be a man about it, and that was just a really cool scene between me and her.

What was it like working with Kaitlin?

She's really fun. She's really cool.

I don't know how long you've been on Twitter, but do you enjoy that instant feedback you get from social media on your projects?

I've been on Twitter for like two years now, and I really do enjoy the feedback. It's really cool talking to fans and stuff.

Do you plan to live tweet any of the premieres or anything?

Yeah, I mean, that would be fun maybe if I did that.

Do you have a favorite role out of all the ones you've done so far?

I don't know. My two favorite roles right now that I've done are Middle School, Preacher, and the one I'm doing now, The Mick.

What is it that you watch in your free time? What are your favorite TV shows or movies?

My favorite shows right now are The Walking Dead; I really like Blue Mountain State. And Preacher, I saw the premiere of Preacher, and it's really, really good. That's definitely going to be one of my favorite shows now, and so is The Mick.

Thomas BarbuscaDo you have a dream role that you would love to play? Either a type of role, or if you could play any character.

Rick on The Walking Dead.

I take it you'd love to be on that show at some point?

Yeah, I really would. That would be cool.

Do you have any other projects coming up that you want to talk about?

I'm doing a movie called Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life. It's based on a James Patterson book series. It's directed by Steve Carr from Mall Cop. It's in theaters October 7th, and I play Leo.
