On tonight's all-new episode of Dark Matter, the crew of the Raza follows the lead of Nyx, played by Melanie Liburd, when she suggests hitting up a freighter ship for some drugs that they can sell for a lot of cash. They soon realize, however, that she has the ulterior motive of saving her brother (Mpho Koaho), who is being held prisoner on the ship that Nyx was previously able to escape.

It's also revealed in the episode why Nyx has always been so great at improvising fight moves and was able to knock Three (Anthony Lemke) out of the way in the previous episode. She and her brother had been given drugs on the ship and connected to the group consciousness, which gave them the ability to predict what is about to happen.

The actress recently talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive about Nyx and her abilities, and her work on the series.

SCIFI VISION: How did you first get involved in the show?

MELANIE LIBURD: I was over in the UK visiting family, so I sent an audition tape over to the producers in Canada. I then spoke to our lovely producers Joe Mallozzi and Vanessa Piazza over the phone...I think they just wanted to make sure I wasn't completely crazy! [laughs] I was 'over the moon' to get the job!

Is there anyone who inspired your portrayal of her or did you take everything from the script? Also how are you most similar/different from her?

I read the script and got a strong feeling for Nyx's energy. Her fight, passion and sparky spirit appealed to me the most; she's complex and interesting to play. I think Nyx could charm or fight her way out of any situation; she's ruthless. I'm more of a chill out and have a glass of wine type of gal!

In this week's episode we find out more about who Nyx is and what her 'ability' is. Now that they know she can predict things, will the rest of the group embrace it and use it to their advantage?

Nyx's ability definitely works to the group's advantage and they embrace this. On future missions she helps protect and save members of the crew as well as warns them if something bad or dangerous is seconds from happening. She also has a major advantage when it comes to playing games or gambling as you can imagine and has a lot of fun doing this!

Her brother now is dead. Can you say anything about the possibility of the ship coming after her, or perhaps her going after them?

Nyx still doesn't know the circumstances surrounding her brother's death. There is no way she would ever want to return to the Seer ship after being tortured, drugged and treated very badly there. She also feels desperately guilty that she couldn't stop her brother from going back.

Are there more secrets she has that we will learn about her coming up? Like will we learn why she was in the prison, anything like that?

Nyx has lots of secrets. Also what we have to remember about Nyx is that she has a good heart and would do just about anything for the people she trusts and loves. So she's actually a good person, looking to belong and trying to survive in a very corrupt world. You could say that goes for all of the Raza crew.

Nyx is starting to become more integrated in the group. Who do you think she is closest to?

Nyx has a close and unspoken connection with Two. They have a lot in common. Also after being very closed and shut off emotionally for a long time, she slowly opens up and starts to confide and trust in another likeminded member of the crew. They have a lot of fun together!

Early in the season on the conference call you hinted about a possible relationship/hookup with one of the characters. Can you talk about that at all?

The relationship she develops is passionate and powerful on all levels. That's all I can say.

You've had some great fight scenes. Can you talk about those and any training you had as part of the show?

I've learnt so many incredible new skills this season including working with bo staffs, katanas, hand to hand combat, and gun training. It's a dream job, and I'm enjoying every moment.

We usually have stunt rehearsals for half a day, film it on our phones, and then go home and watch it back and practice like crazy. I'm quite a physical person, so I loved the training involved for all the fight scenes.

We have awesome stunt doubles, and our stunt co ordinator John Stead is a master of just about everything. He and his team also do a great job of keeping us safe at all times, thank goodness!

Can you talk about any special effects you've worked with?

It was always fun when the whole crew adventured out on a mission in the Marauder. You'd be looking out of windows, imagining space, and getting shot at and thrown around by explosions. It feels a bit like being in the old Star Trek movies! Usually we'd end up in crazy hysterics and it would take twice as long to film the scene!

Do you have a favorite piece of futuristic tech that's used on the show?

In the show it was a big deal for Nyx to get a comm from Two. It meant she was fully accepted and trusted by the crew. That was a great day for her.

It's funny, because these little black unassuming ear pieces would drive us all crazy! You can't hear anything in the scene and they keep falling out! [laughs]

What is your favorite part of the ship set?

The bridge is awesome; it has incredible amounts of detail.

What has been your favorite scene to film? Which was the hardest?

My favorite and most difficult scene is in episode 2.12. It's action packed, shocking, dramatic, and emotional. It was a full-on few days.

Describe your character in three words.

Loyal, passionate, ruthless. Nyx is a chameleon.

Are there any other projects coming up that you want to promote?

I have a beautiful independent movie coming out in cinemas at the end of the year called Double Play. Please go watch it!

Anything else you want me to add?

Thank you for some great questions. Also a huge thank you to all of the Dark Matter fans for all the kind words and support; you guys are the best!
